Diamond in the Rough: Damond Verrett

Damond Verrett is a 6’1 260-Pound Offensive Tackle for Booker T Washington High School New Orleans. He holds blocks very well and keeps run gaps open for a long time. In run-block situations he moves bodies across the line of scrimmage so smoothly it almost appears as if he is trying to pull. When he actually does pull from his tackle spots he makes great contact and can clear defenders from the line of scrimmage all the way into the defensive secondary. He also has very good hands in the passing game, however, he sometimes relies on his hands to make up for areas in his footwork that could be corrected at the next level. He also has experience on the defensive line and creates havoc on the interior. What makes him so good at the tackle spot is his speed and ferociousness, and both of those characteristics transfer to the defensive side of the ball extremely well.

Do you have any goals for the rest of 2022? My goal for the rest of 2022 is to keep making everyone around me better and finish the school year off the right way.

What is your biggest strength as a football player? My biggest strength as a football player is being a student of the game and my killer focus, I feel like when I step on the field I’m the best one on the field and I want it more than the man across from me.

What makes you different than every other recruit in the country? What makes me different from every other recruit in the country is that I just want it more than everyone.

What is your proudest achievement in football? I lost my dad at 3 years old and we always used to have talks about being the Diamond. My mom took over and I told her, I am the Diamond and soon she’ll never have to work again. I am the diamond in the family and I know I can go a long way, I just need a chance.

What is an example of you overcoming adversity as an athlete? My proudest achievement in football is my first all-district selection plaque for Offensive Guard. I’ve always been a Defensive Lineman and didn’t really want to play o line but my coach put me at left guard and wanted to see what kind of dawg I really was. Made the most of it and now I feel like the Best Offensive Guard in the state.

If you had to compare yourself to a college or professional player, Who would it be? Why? If I had to compare myself to a pro player I would say, Penei Sewell, Trent Willams, and Aaron Donald.

What is something you are looking for in a college program during your recruitment?  You put them three together and mash it up you’ll get me. In the recruiting process, I’m looking for a school that shows the most love but not sweet love tough love I was bought up off tough love, and a school that lets the new guy compete for a spot. I want to play ball, I want to move anywhere that the coach tells me and be able to perform at the best of my ability.

What’s your favorite football memory? My favorite football moment is of course my pancakes but my forced fumble to take my team to the playoffs is undefeated.

What is something you would want college coaches to know about you? I would want all coaches to know I am a hardworking DOG who wants to play ball anywhere at any position and would perform to the best of my ability.

Who is someone you look up to off the football field? Off the field, I look up to my family and my coaches. They make sure I’m good and in due time I’ll make sure they’re good.

What role do you play as a leader on the team?

On the Field I am the tough leader, I feel like tough love would teach you life lessons.
