Denham Springs Storms Back In Fourth Quarter To Defeat Dutchtown 21-17

After being held scoreless in three quarters, Denham Springs Yellow Jackets’ offense found its spark plug against the Dutchtown Griffins and came rallying back for the 21-17 victory.

The Griffins were coming in hot into this matchup winning three straight games by shutout and it looked like it would happen again as the Griffins stingy defense stuffed the Yellow Jackets through three quarters. The Griffins would score all of its points in the second quarter and would hold a 17-0 lead for most of the night.

That was until the fourth quarter came alive for the Yellow Jackets’ offense. The first touchdown scored by the Yellow Jackets came off of a 5 play, 70 yard drive when quarterback Reese Mooney completed a 35 yard touchdown pass to Cameron Eirick to put an end to Dutchtown’s streak of pitching 17 consecutive shutout quarters to pull within 10.

After a three and out forced by the Yellow Jackets’ defense, Denham Springs got the ball at Dutchtown’s six yard line off of a bad snap on the Griffins’ punt. The Yellow Jackets would take advantage, scoring on a three yard touchdown run from Ray McKneely.

Once again, the Yellow Jackets got another stop and then a third touchdown to put them ahead late. The third touchdown in the fourth quarter came on another touchdown pass from Mooney to Eirick with 1:21 left to play in the fourth quarter. The Liberty quarterback commit caught fire in the final stanza completing 6 of 9 passes for 117 yards and two touchdown passes.

The strong fourth quarter gave Denham Springs the 21-17 victory and improved their record to 7-2 overall. Meanwhile, Dutchtown’s five game winning streak is snapped and as a result, falls to 5-3 overall.

Next week, Denham Springs ends the regular season at home against Walker. Meanwhile, Dutchtown has a huge district matchup against East Ascension.
