D.I.T.R: Desmond Simmons

Our newest D.I.T.R. is Class of 2025 running back Desmond Simmons. Desmond is a 5’9″ 170lb running back for C.E. Byrd High School in Shreveport, LA. Desmond was a standout athlete from our Gridiron Elite Football Camp that was held at Rayville High School in Rayville, LA. At the camp, Desmond posted up a 4.89 second 40-yard dash, 4.75 3 cone shuttle and a 8’3.5″ broad jump. Desmond is a powerful downhill runner that moves well in-between the tackles. His size and frame allow him to get low with the ball in order to drive defenders. He fits well as a piece in the C.E. Byrd Options style offense as a tailback, a position where he had over 300 rushing yards and 6 TDs as a Sophomore. Desmond also wanted me to include that he does everything in life for his lord and savior Jesus Christ on and off the field. Desmond’s size and strength as well as leadership mentality make him a back for all coaches and scouts to keep on their radar in the next two years.

I was fortunate enough to speak with Desmond and gain some insight into his life and athletic career.

When did you start playing football and why did you start playing?

“I started playing football around the age of 5. I grew up around football because I have brothers and uncles who played. I was always outside playing with them and I was the youngest so I really looked up to them and wanted to be like them which led me to playing.”

What aspect of the game made you fall in love with the sport?

“I love hitting, that’s my favorite part of the game.

Do you play any other sports?

“I have trained with the track team on the offseason but I just focus on football for now.”

Is there a professional player that you would compare yourself to?

“Lately I’ve been told Josh Jacobs or Nick Chubb. Nick Chubb is a good powerback and has good vision as well. I feel like my ability to see holes in the defense is a strong part of my game so that may be why.”

What have you learned about yourself from playing football?

“Mentally, that I am strong and also a leader on my team. Not to sound cocky but I feel like I have always been put in a leadership role. My coaches see me as a guy that does what he is supposed to and leads by example for younger guys.”

What sets you apart from the other players at your position?

“I feel like my work ethic sets me apart, on and off the field. My parents always tell me I’m a student before an athlete.”

What school subject is the most appealing to you and why?

“I love math, it brings a challenge to my min. I love dealing with numbers.”

What goals have you set for yourself this upcoming season?

“I want to see the team in the dome. As a personal goal I would like to reach 1,000 rushing yards.”

What is something you are working on improving in practice?

“I am working on improving my speed by working out with the track guys.”

How would your teammates describe you?

“As hardworking, unique and funny guy. Just a great person to be around.”

What kind of qualities do you believe a leader should have?

“They must be able to take coaches criticism and have good listening skills. Hopefully being a great person all around.”

How do you balance your football and academic career?

“I always put school first. It’s a big thing for my parents to have a good academic career that way if football doesn’t work out then I can have school to fall back on.”

What do you do to challenge yourself in order to get better?

“I constantly work out when I get the chance. I want to be working with and against the best guys, the guys who have stars and want the competition.”

What are some hobbies you like to do in your free time?

“I love spending time with my family and friends. I like playing the game and being a normal teenage guy just chilling.”
