Chalmette ruins John Ehret’s homecoming night with a 21-12 win

Chalmette soured John Ehret’s homecoming game with a 21-12 victory that put the Owls in the driver’s seat of the district.

John Ehret (4-4, 1-1) had a 12-0 lead with just five minutes left in the first half and it looked like the Patriots were going to run away with it. However, the Owls (7-1, 1-1) would come roaring back with back-to-back touchdown drives to take a 14-12 lead late in the first half and would score again on their first possession of the second half.

The Owls were led by the efforts of running back Axton Lopez and Couvillion. Lopez rushed for 107 yards and scored two touchdowns (one rushing and one receiving). Couvillon completed 11 of his 22 pass attempts for 143 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.

After a scoreless first quarter, John Ehret quarterback Darnell O’Quinn would find wide receiver Raymond Lain for a deep pass inside and would be knocked out of bounds. A couple of plays later Darnell O’Quinn would find the endzone for a 6-0 lead.

The Patriots and Owls would trade possessions after an interception by John Ehret defensive back Jadan WIlliamson and a botched pitch by O’Quinn that would be recovered by Chalmette linebacker Elijah DuBose.

After Williamson and the Patriot defense would make a huge stop, John Ehret running back Damian Smith would score a 38-yard touchdown run to give the Patriots a 12-0 lead. Both of John Ehret’s extra-point attempts failed after a bad snap and a missed try.

However, with the sun being set, Chalmette would become the Owls of the Night. Chalmette would score two touchdowns in the final three minutes of the first half when Couvillion would find a wide receiver for a 23-yard touchdown and Lopez on a one-yard touchdown pass to put the Owls ahead 14-12 at the half.

On Chalmette’s first offensive drive of the second half, Lopez spearheaded a six-minute, 13-play dive as he rushed for 51 yards on seven carries, including his second touchdown of the game where he punched it in from eight yards out to give the Owls a 21-12 lead.

Neither offense scored the rest of the way due to strong defensive performances from both sides. Chalmette defensive back Tyler Watson would seal the victory for the Owls with an interception in the endzone and Couvillion would take the final snap with a kneel down.

Chalmette will play against a pesky Bonnabel team while John Ehret will square off against East Jefferson.
