Catholic Dominates University 27-7

For the second year in a row, Catholic High has beaten cross town rival University Lab. This year’s game however was not even close to what the score board said at the final whistle. The Bears seemed to impose their will on the Cubs through all four quarters of the game. Allowing only three trips to the red zone and just one score with twenty seconds left on the game clock.

Catholic would win the toss and defer to the second half. The opening kickoff was sent into the end-zone for a touchback. U-High’s very first play was beautifully drawn up. A wide receiver pass from senior Christian Ard to senior Jardin Gilbert for 44 yards. Unfortunately the drive for the Cubs would end in a turnover on downs.

Senior running back George Hart III would start the scoring for the Bears, lining up as the Bears wildcat quarterback, punching it in from six yards out. Hart would add another score in just over two minutes later. The PAT however would be no good, and the Bears would go up 13-0.

The second quarter was a defensive battle between the two schools. Neither wanted to blink. The Bears would go into halftime with a 13-0 lead over the Cubs.

After halftime the Bears would receive the opening kick, quarterback Landon O’Connor was reading the Cub defense impeccably. “They were a great defense,” said O’Connor. “They sent some blitzes that hurried me up in the pocket on some deep balls. We have a lot of things to correct, but I think we did a pretty good job.”

O’Connor was 10 of 13 (77%) for 94 yards and 1 passing touchdown on the evening. The quarterback also lead the Bears in rushing with 13 carries for 82 yards and a touchdown. “He did a great job running the ball,” said Head coach Gabe Fertitta. “He protected the ball, made sure he didn’t make any careless errors, we put a lot on that guy with the shifts and the motions. He did an outstanding job leading us tonight.”

The game was finally put out of reach for the Cubs when Landon O’Connor found Jackson Guest for a seven yard screen touchdown. Guest put the Bears up 27-0

The Cubs would finally get on the board after three tries inside the five by running back Derrick Graham. “Some sloppy things that need to get cleaned up,” said Fertitta “But, every win is a good win, in my book.”
