Caleb Evans Named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week

NEW ORLEANS – ULM freshman quarterback Caleb Evans has been named Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday morning, two days after Evans became the first ULM quarterback to throw for three touchdowns or more since Kolton Browning threw five touchdowns in October 2013.

Evans finished his first collegiate start 26-for-38 with three touchdowns and 279 yards passing as he helped lead ULM to a 42-35 overtime win over South Alabama on Saturday night inside JPS Field at Malone Stadium. His 279 yards through the air is the second-most for a ULM quarterback making his first start, dating back to 1998, behind only Andre Vige’s 322 yards passing in September 1998.

In addition, Evans’ three touchdown passes is tied for the most by a Warhawk QB making his first start, while his 26 completions are the most for a first-time starter. Only three quarterbacks had attempted more passes than Evans’ 38 in their first start across program history.

With Evans’ three touchdowns against South Alabama, ULM has now had three different quarterbacks throw for two or more touchdowns in a game this season, joining Garrett Smith and Will Collins. This marks the second consecutive season that the Warhawks have had three different quarterbacks with multiple touchdown games, after they were one of just four FBS programs with that distinction during the 2015 campaign.

Evans and the Warhawks hit the road the next two weekends for Sun Belt Conference matchups at Georgia State (this Saturday) and Appalachian State (Nov. 19) before returning home to close the regular season against UL-Lafayette on December 3.
