Cajuns Overcome Curse of Jonesboro, Defeat Red Wolves 37-20

Thursday night in Jonesboro, AR was a very entertaining football game, and the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns left Northeast Arkansas victorious for just the 3rd time in 28 years after a 37-20 win in front of a national audience. Louisiana was led by Raymond “Ray Ray” Calais, who compiled 144 yards on 8 carries as well as 2 touchdowns for the Cajuns. His TD runs were for 80 and 38 yards respectively. Levi Lewis was decent, going 17-24 for 181 yards, throwing 0 TDs and throwing one INT.

For Arkansas State, Layne Hatcher, the transfer from Alabama, went 23-34 for 301 yards, 3 TDs and 1 INT. His top receiver was Omar Bayless, who leads the FBS in yards and TDs. Bayless had 9 catches for 150 yards in the contest last night, Kirk Merritt, the former Destrehan product, had 2 catches for 28 yards and a score for the Red Wolves. However, it was Marcel Murray who carried Arkansas State’s offense, getting 164 yards on 35 carries Thursday.

Arkansas State closed the 14 point halftime gap to into a 4 point gap at the beginning of the 4th quarter, but the Cajuns offense pulled away with TDs from Elijah Mitchell and Calais to make it 37-20 and effectively end the ball game.

Louisiana (5-2) will get a needed break as they don’t suit up again until Homecoming on Novemebr 2nd against Texas State at Cajun Field. Arkansas State (3-4) will host Texas State next Saturday for their Homecoming.
